Interviewing people in the city

Insights -

  • Most people treat breaks as a functional time just to eat and replenish energy - not mental breaks from their environment.
  • Unexpected chance for connectedness - a lot of people surveyed said they sometimes meet with friends on their break.
  • Most people do not have allocated time slots for their break, so they just go on their own terms.
  • Some people do not even leave the office/take a break at all.
  • Most people use the waterfront on their breaks as an environment to relax.
  • Most people have adapted to the city environment, so they are used to the noise and amount of people.
  • Most people find the city convenient in terms of everything being close.

Observations -

  • 'Breaks' are for food
  • Green space gets very utilised for relaxation
  • Keep to yourself atmosphere - unusual spatial behaviour stands out and makes users feel anxious.
